Soccer predictions The Australian Open`s greatest women's finals
The Australian Open is fully regarded as a holiday of tennis. The tournament, once massively overlooked by the big players, is today not only a model for organizing competitions of this type but also incorporating amazing marketing growth and commercial success. But the Australian Open glamor is just one of the things that constantly attracts new fans. The Green continent has seen amazingly spectacular and dramatic matches for both men and women. Eurosport reminds us of the most famous among them, and today we will be talking about the finest finals with the ladies.
Margaret Court vs. Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley (1971)
At the Australian Open final in 1971, a real clash of generations took place. Margaret Court has already established herself as the big star of women`s tennis and for 9 years has ruled ruthlessly at the Open in her home country. A possible victory for her would mean she would become the first woman to win 10 titles in a Grand Slam tournament.
Court`s task is not easy. On the other side of the network is nine years younger compatriot Evonne Goolagong Cawley, which is determined by experts as a future star. Both are placed under the number 1 and 2 in the scheme and are quite expected and fit in the final, which becomes a real spectacle.
In the first set, Cawley flies on the court and wins by 6:2. It looks like Australia will finally have a new tennis queen. But Margaret Court would not have been Margaret Court if she would just give up. The champion saves a few break points and wins the 7:6 set by knocking Cawley 7:0 into the tiebreak! But drama is not over. The two finalists put everything in their third set, but ultimately Margaret`s experience and irony psyche helped to break his 7:5 rival and win his title number 10 in the tournament. Today, Margaret Court is a Grand Slam titles recorder (24), and the second largest court in the Australian Open complex is named after her. Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley, in turn, fully justifies the star status they predict. Several months after her loss to Court, she won Roland Garros and Wimbledon. There are four titles from the Australian Open, and another triumph of the Holy Grass in 1980.
Martina Navratilova vs. Chris Evert (1981)
Ten years after the match between Court and Cawley, the final by soccer partners of the Australian Open became the arena of one of the most famous rivalries in women`s tennis. Three months earlier, Navratilova defeated Evert in three sets of the US Open semifinals. In the week before Australian championship, Evert takes a psychological advantage by overtaking Navratilova in three sets of grass courts at the Sydney tournament.
While not winning any of the nine grand slam tournaments preceding Australian Open 81, Navratilova does not come out of the front pages of the newspapers. Five months before the tournament, she receives US citizenship and scandalizes the world of tennis, revealing her homosexuality publicly. Meanwhile, Evert continues to be number one in the rankings and arrives in Australia as a Wimbledon champion.
So it is time for the two to score strength in the Australian Open final. The game goes very early when?
