Honda was surprised by the change in the concept of the Red Bull car after the success of the 2022 season.


According to the head of Honda`s racing division, Koji Watanabe, the Japanese company`s engineers did everything to satisfy Red Bull`s requests and adapt the power plant to the new car as best as possible.


Speaking of this year`s Red Bull car, yes, we were very surprised at how much Red Bull changed in the design of the RB20 car compared to its predecessor.


Last year we won 21 out of 22 races together, but they still decided to change the concept of the car, incredible!


They made many requests to adapt our engine to the new RB20 concept car. And when we saw the new car in real life, we were really surprised at how many elements they decided to change.


As for our work, we, of course, no longer have the opportunity to increase power [in conditions of freezing further engine development], but we can better adapt the engine to the new car.


In addition, we can work to improve the reliability of the motor. This is exactly what we did all winter. This gave Red Bull more freedom in terms of design variability and aerodynamic concept. It was because of this that they were able to change the location of the oil cooling system, radiators, and so on.


Last year we sometimes had a risk of engine damage. Yes, in the end it was not a big problem, but we should always strive to minimize the risk. Therefore, we have made every effort to ensure that engine reliability is even higher this year, " said Watanabe.
